Scope and Background

In systems with long-range interactions, we expect various interesting cooperative phenomena that are very different from those seen in short-range systems. It has been pointed out that long-range interactions are realized in systems with elastic lattice structures. For example, in spin-crossover materials and charge-transfer materials, the volume of the unit cell changes with its spin or charge state, causing a deformation of the lattice. In these materials, we therefore expect effective long-range interactions due to the elastic deformations. Among adsorbed atoms on an elastic substrate, the elastic interactions due to the deformation of the adlayer also play an important role. A typical long-range interaction is the dipole-dipole interaction among nanoscopic magnets or single-molecule magnets, which causes a peculiar phase transition. Long-range interactions also play important roles in fields as diverse as polymers and earthquakes. Recently, new O(N) numerical methods to study models with long-range interactions have been developed.

We organize this workshop to discuss novel phenomena, techniques, and results concerning systems with long-range interactions. We will study the critical properties of such systems, and also dynamical aspects of the ordering and relaxation processes.
